Protecting Timber Outdoors: Design First, Chemicals Second
No coating in the world will save a structure where water sits and pools. This guide shows how to protect your pergola, carport or fence by design first – and where stain, oil and paint genuinely earn their keep afterwards, including realistic maintenance intervals.
Why protection by design always comes first
Wood does not rot because it gets wet – it rots because it stays wet. Things turn critical once the moisture content sits permanently above around 20 per cent: that is when wood-destroying fungi find ideal conditions. Rain itself is not the problem, as long as the water runs off quickly and the timber can dry out freely afterwards. That is exactly the job of protection by design: keep water away, drain it off, and let the wood dry.
Good timber-construction practice sets a clear order of priorities: first exhaust every design measure, then choose a suitable timber species, and only then reach for chemical treatments. For you as a DIY builder, that means every euro invested in good detailing saves many times over in renovation work later.
- Keep water away: roof overhangs, cappings, splash clearance above ground level
- Drain water off: slopes, drip edges, no horizontal surfaces
- Allow drying: ventilation gaps, open joints, no permanently damp contact points
Splashback: the danger zone of the first 30 centimetres
Rain hitting the ground bounces back up onto the timber. That is why the bottom 30 cm above ground level counts as the splash zone – posts, fence pales or cladding boards that run right down to the ground are effectively permanently damp there and are always the first to rot.
Getting post bases right
Posts should never be set into soil or cast into concrete – the embedded section simply cannot dry out. Instead, pour concrete pad foundations and bolt the posts (typically 12 × 12 cm) onto post anchors or H-shaped post supports. Keep at least 15 cm between the end grain and the ground, more in heavily exposed spots. Height-adjustable post bases (as a guide, €8–25 each) also make alignment much easier.
The base zone on cladding and fences
On timber cladding, the bottom edge of the boards should finish around 30 cm above ground level. A gravel strip 20–30 cm wide (16/32 mm grading) instead of grass or bed soil directly against the structure noticeably reduces splashback – one of the cheapest wood-protection measures there is.
End grain: the open flank of every structure
Through its end faces – the end grain – timber soaks up many times the amount of water it absorbs along its length; depending on the species, roughly ten to fifty times as much. Exposed end grain facing straight up is therefore the most common cause of damage to posts and beam ends.
How to protect end grain by design:
- Bevel post tops by at least 15° so water runs off instead of soaking in.
- Better still: fit a capping board or metal post cap with a 2–3 cm overhang and a drip edge.
- Cut the projecting ends of purlins and rafters at an angle rather than square – it reduces the exposed weather face.
- Treat visible end grain additionally with end-grain wax or an end-grain sealer.
Letting water drain: slopes, drip edges, joints
Every horizontal surface outdoors is a small gutter. Design the top faces of handrails, rails and capping boards with at least a 15° slope, and give carport flat roofs a fall of 3–5° so water drains where you want it to. A roof overhang of 30–50 cm also keeps most driving rain off the structure below.
On bottom edges, a drip edge or drip groove (about 6–8 mm deep, roughly 10 mm in from the edge) stops water tracking along the surface and back into the structure. On decking, gaps of 5–8 mm between boards and a fall of around 2 per cent (2 cm per metre) ensure that rain neither stands on the surface nor gets trapped in the joints. Timber cladding needs a ventilated cavity of at least 20 mm behind it so the back face can dry out.
Wherever wood sits directly on wood or on concrete, capillary joints form that positively hold on to water. Decouple such contact faces with EPDM tape or spacers a few millimetres thick – it costs next to nothing and adds years to the service life.
The right timber species as a second line of defence
Heartwood of larch and Douglas fir (durability class 3) lasts many years fully exposed even without a coating, simply weathering to a silvery grey. Oak heartwood (class 2) is more resistant still, but considerably more expensive. Spruce and fir (class 4), by contrast, need rigorous protection through both detailing and coatings. As a guide, structural-grade spruce costs around €450–650 per cubic metre, rough-sawn larch €700–1,000. Pressure-treated pine is a budget-friendly option for fences and secondary components.
Important: for load-bearing components, timber in ground contact and anything that may need consent, check the requirements with your local building authority. Structurally critical questions belong in the hands of a structural engineer – this guide is no substitute for professional design.
Chemical wood protection: stain, oil or opaque paint?
Only once the design is right is a coating worth the effort. Coatings mainly protect against UV and slow down water uptake – they never make up for missing design details. As a rule of thumb: the more pigment, the better the UV protection; the thicker the film, the more work the renovation once it starts to peel.

Which coating for which component?
Decking boards and other walked-on surfaces never get a film-forming coating – oil is the right choice here, because it cannot peel. For pergolas, carports and cladding, thin-film stain is the forgiving standard: it weathers evenly and can be refreshed without sanding. Opaque paints play to their long service life on windows, doors and cladding, but demand the most work when renovation time comes. Preservative primers with biocides (against blue stain and fungal decay) only make sense where spruce or pine is heavily exposed to the weather – on sheltered or permanently dry components they are unnecessary.
Maintenance intervals: the annual spring check
Wood protection is not a one-off project but a routine. Once a year – ideally in spring – set aside about half an hour per structure:
- Water-drop test: does water bead on the surface? If it soaks in within a few minutes, a fresh coat is due.
- Post bases: clear away leaves, soil and vegetation so the ground clearance is maintained.
- End grain and cappings: check caps and capping boards for cracks and loose fixings.
- Cracks: keep an eye on lengthwise splits from about 5 mm wide on horizontal surfaces – that is where water collects.
- Connectors: retighten screws and brackets, and check hardware for corrosion.
Clean greyed or green-tinged timber with a soft brush, water and a little mild detergent. Only use a pressure washer at a distance and with a fan nozzle, otherwise you will tear open the wood fibres and create new entry points for moisture.
Common mistakes – and a planning tip
The most expensive mistakes happen before the first coat goes on: posts set in concrete, end grain left open and facing upwards, decking laid without a fall and with joints too tight, and film-forming coatings on surfaces that are constantly wet. Avoid those four points and a good 80 per cent of your wood protection is already done – the coating is then the finishing touch, not a rescue attempt.
